Hatteras, here we come!

Friday Sept. 6 and Saturday Sept. 7, 2013

We are on our way to a fabulous week on Hatteras Island, North Carolina!  The Outer Banks.  One of the most amazing places we have ever been.  And we get around!

There is a problem, though.  It is 13.5 hours away.  Not including any stops.  I am not a fan of car travel.  Or airplane travel.  Let me know when I can teleport.  That will be the best!

We decided to stay over in a town about halfway, Breezewood, PA.  It is obviously everyone's halfway point!  When we arrived at the super cool Holiday Inn Express, the parking lot was full.  They were all gone in the morning, everyone on their way.

Brad did great driving.  He had been up since 5 am, worked all day, then drove the 7ish hours.  My new peppermint oil did a darn good job keeping him alert!  He rubbed some on his forehead and behind his ears a few times.  Amazing.

Since we arrived at about 1 am, we slept in.  We had the coolest free breakfast.  An automatic pancake maker!  Who knew?

A highlight of the trip: our first ever visit to a Chick Fil A restaurant.  We couldn't eat there in the past because it all contains milk and the girls were milk free.  But no longer!  We were very impressed by the service.  The only problem was that Lainie doesn't like chicken!  Great.  "But you like chicken tenders" I said.  "Only cheap ones because they don't taste like chicken" she said.  She got a kid's meal with literally ONE chicken strip in it.  The rest of us were in love with the chicken!  Lainie was happy, however, with her super duper watch that was her prize.  Anyhoo, we loved when a Chick Fil A kid came around to see if we needed our "beverages refreshed."  He took the cups and got us refills!  (OK so we are easily impressed.)

Driving driving driving and another 7 ish hours later we are here!  We got to our rental home, The Laughing Gull.  All of the houses down here have a name.  We stayed here last year in May.  We really liked it so decided to rent here again.  It's not fancy, but it's big and cheap and the location is so great!

We unloaded, which is hard.  It is up 2 flights just to get in the door!  That is the girls' level.  With 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths.  Cool.  Then up another flight to the main living area and master bedroom.  I left these dudes to unpack and went to grab some groceries.  The store was crazy crowded...I wasn't expecting that.  We have been here twice in mid May and there is no one here!  I was so tired and not feeling well and was just overwhelmed.  I came home to find most stuff unpacked and Lainie made up all the beds!  Yay!

It was dark but Lainie and I wanted to go to the beach and hear the ocean.  We walked over there and it was really, REALLY dark.  Holy stars, Batman!  I am certain there are more stars here than anywhere in the world!  We could see 1000 galaxies.

We sat in the sand listening to the waves crashing and looking at the sky.

We were nervous to get too close to the ocean since we couldn't see a thing.  All of a sudden I saw something just over there...."what IS that?" I said.  That was all Lainie needed.  She took off running!  Left me to die!  There was no time for discussion.  Like when we got back on the boardwalk, she said "I think I saw a big fence post."  Coulda said that before running away!  It was tall and looked like a person.  Or a monster.  Who knows?  OK now I know.  Here is a pic.  Now wait...this is in the daytime.  You don't know how scary this looked in the dark!

We ran back, panting, and were safe.  Obviously we were not attacked by bears or monsters.  Not even by random fence posts on the beach.

Can't wait for our first full day tomorrow!
